Some of the best-known people in the Bible shift their own shortcomings to God.
When Adam and Eve eat the forbidden fruit, Adam’s defense is: “The woman _whom thou gavest to be with me_, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat” (1)
When the Israelites were complaining to Moses in the wilderness, he promptly complained in turn to God: “Wherefore hast thou afflicted thy servant? and wherefore have I not found favour in thy sight, that thou layest the burden of this people upon me? Have I conceived all this people? have I begotten them, that thou shouldest say unto me, Carry them in your bosom, as a nursing father beareth the suckling child, unto the land which thou swarest unto their fathers? Whence should I have flesh to give unto all these people? I am not able to bear all this people alone, because it is too heavy for me. And if thou deal thus with me, kill me, I pray thee, out of hand…” (2)
There are pages and pages in Job. Here is a single line: “Why is light given to a man whose way is hid, and whom God hath hedged in?” (3) Job, incidentally, is blameless. The point of the book is not that Job sins, but that God does not answer to man.
